The only (and paid) entrance to the city for the disenfranchised \u0218chei Romanians during Saxon&nbsp;rule.\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/travels\/eastern-europe\/romania\/2023-06-06-risnov\/2953.jpg\"><\/li>\n\n<li>Students of the National College of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andrei_%C8%98aguna\">Andrei \u0218aguna<\/a> (baron, bishop and educator) are going fishing.\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/travels\/eastern-europe\/romania\/2023-06-06-risnov\/2947-0033.jpg\"><\/li>\n\n<li>College teachers\u2019 house.\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/travels\/eastern-europe\/romania\/2023-06-06-risnov\/2949.jpg\"><\/li>\n\n<li>The Black Tower from a&nbsp;respectful distance.\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/travels\/eastern-europe\/romania\/2023-06-06-risnov\/2956.jpg\"><\/li>\n\n<li>Its contemporary and neighbour, the White Tower, differs more in geometry than colour. Town Hall, \u0218chei Gate and \u201cDracula\u2019s Castle\u201d (which has nothing to do with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vlad_the_Impaler\">Vlad&nbsp;the&nbsp;Impaler<\/a>).\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/travels\/eastern-europe\/romania\/2023-06-06-risnov\/3002.jpg\"><\/li>\n\n<li>That\u2019s why I\u2019m not going to Bran, but to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/R%C3%A2%C8%99nov\">R\u00e2\u0219nov<\/a>. It\u2019s more authentic here.\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/travels\/eastern-europe\/romania\/2023-06-06-risnov\/3014.jpg\"><\/li>\n\n<li>Flower market and the city name on the hill (it\u2019s <a class=\"pseudo-link\" href=\"#2969\">the&nbsp;same<\/a> in Bra\u0219ov, if anyone noticed).\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/travels\/eastern-europe\/romania\/2023-06-06-risnov\/3021-2.jpg\"><\/li>\n\n<li>Romanesque-Gothic Evangelical Church of the 13<sup>th<\/sup> century. In&nbsp;1543, the Lutherans covered up the medieval paintings, now partially restored.\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/travels\/eastern-europe\/romania\/2023-06-06-risnov\/3029.jpg\"><\/li>\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/utopiabalcanica.net\/\">Balkan utopia<\/a> by cartoonist Sergiu&nbsp;Vasile. \n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/travels\/eastern-europe\/romania\/2023-06-06-risnov\/3030.jpg\"><\/li>\n\n<li>R\u00e2\u0219nov Citadel built in the 1220s by the Teutonic Knights at the request of the king <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andrew_II_of_Hungary\">Andrew II<\/a>, who expelled them immediately after that.\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/travels\/eastern-europe\/romania\/2023-06-06-risnov\/3048.jpg\"><\/li>\n\n<li>But the German peasants and artisans remained, turning the fortress into a&nbsp;fortified village, for times were <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/First_Mongol_invasion_of_Hungary\">turbulent<\/a>.\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/travels\/eastern-europe\/romania\/2023-06-06-risnov\/3056.jpg\"><\/li>\n\n<li>The last time locals took refuge here was during the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hungarian_Revolution_of_1848\">Hungarian Revolution<\/a> of&nbsp;1848. Then the citadel was abandoned and slowly collapsed.\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/travels\/eastern-europe\/romania\/2023-06-06-risnov\/3044.jpg\"><\/li>\n\n<li>Now the fortress is inaccessible to visitors, but nothing stops you climbing the&nbsp;walls.\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/travels\/eastern-europe\/romania\/2023-06-06-risnov\/3068.jpg\"><\/li>\n\n<li>One can get to it by a&nbsp;funicular, similar to an industrial elevator.\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/travels\/eastern-europe\/romania\/2023-06-06-risnov\/3084.jpg\"><\/li>\n\n<li>From its top deck, the whole city is at your fingertips.\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/travels\/eastern-europe\/romania\/2023-06-06-risnov\/3081.jpg\"><\/li>\n\n<li>There\u2019s a&nbsp;very atmospheric Pe\u0219tera Valea Cet\u0103\u021bii (Fortress Valley \u0421ave) over two or three kilometres from the citadel.\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/travels\/eastern-europe\/romania\/2023-06-06-risnov\/3121.jpg\"><\/li>\n\n<li>It was discovered in 1949 (when underground waters burst out), and for a&nbsp;long time one had to crawl inside through a&nbsp;narrow&nbsp;gap.\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/travels\/eastern-europe\/romania\/2023-06-06-risnov\/3126.jpg\"><\/li>\n\n<li>In 2011, they expanded the entrance, installed electricity and created a&nbsp;gallery. It&nbsp;turned out pretty nice, and the scale can&nbsp;be assessed, too.\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/travels\/eastern-europe\/romania\/2023-06-06-risnov\/3107.jpg\"><\/li>\n\n<li>My little Stonehenge.\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/travels\/eastern-europe\/romania\/2023-06-06-risnov\/3122.jpg\"><\/li>\n\n<li>I don\u2019t see why a noble don shouldn\u2019t dig a&nbsp;well at the station.\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/travels\/eastern-europe\/romania\/2023-06-06-risnov\/3162.jpg\"><\/li>\n\n<li>The ancient train from Bra\u0219ov to R\u00e2\u0219nov is more atmospheric than comfortable.
